March 2008

It's time for a change

For the lazy drivers among us – myself included – there is something about our cars that’ll be ‘right’ for the first time in months at the end of March!

As we haven’t bothered (or don’t know how) to alter our cars’ digital clocks since last Summer, they “magically” right themselves at the start of British summertime on Sunday March 30th.

Wish it was the same for the much needed Spring Clean!

For much of the time, your car has been subject to the very worst the British weather can throw at it… sometimes covered in mud, grime and rock salt which we haven’t bothered to wash off in the belief it will be just as bad the next day.

So now is the time for us to give our cars a thorough post-Winter clean and check, aimed at keeping your motoring trouble free in the coming gentler months, though sadly this won’t happen automatically.

Make sure that these are the sort of jobs on your basic car maintenance hit list next weekend. It really won’t take you that long to:

  • CHECK tyre tread and pressures (and adjust pressures whenever you’re carrying extra weight)
  • CHECK oil levels, especially before and after long journeys
  • CHECK your lights, brakes, indicators (you can reverse up to a wall or garage door to check your brake lights yourself)
  • CHECK the condition of your battery (remember that many breakdowns are battery related)… and finally
  • WASH AWAY any Winter grime, especially from underneath your vehicle where it can do long-term damage.

So if you have the slightest doubt about how your car’s running after the winter weather, then check it out now to help avoid a breakdown.

For the motorists who did adjust their clocks last October, remember to put them forward by one hour (along with all your house clocks) on Sunday 30th March 2008, the start of British summertime.
