Let's be honest. What do we really know about tyre safety?

Visible cuts, tears, bald patches and bulges will make nearly all UK motorists change their tyres.

But when it comes to complete tyre safety, many motorists seem to have a permanent blind spot about other types of dangerous damage.

For example, in a survey by breakdown organisation Autonational Rescue, 28% of UK motorists thought they could safely use a tyre on their car after it had been "pierced by a nail but not losing pressure". Wrong!

And when it comes to knowing the correct amount of tread on their tyres, far too many motorists have absolutely no idea.

Autonational's marketing manager Ronan Hart says: "I don't think most people understand the difference that car tyres can make to safety, especially when driving in the wet or in icy road conditions at this time of year.

"We would recommend that drivers adopt a New Year's Resolution - to only use quality tyres on their cars, which in the end will pay back dividends in terms of safety and fuel consumption."
