The key to cutting down on car crime is right there....
on your key ring!
Motorists are being urged to take simple ‘common sense’
precautions so they don’t become victims of car crime.
Car breakdown service Autonational Rescue says car thefts and other
forms of car crime in the UK would be dramatically reduced if drivers
followed some basic but sound advice.
This includes simply:
- Locking
their cars, house doors and windows (day and night)
- Keeping
keys and valuables out of sight
- Never
leaving the keys in the ignition and cars unattended especially on
cold mornings, warmed up and ready for the opportunist thief
Ronan Hart, Autonational Rescue’s marketing manager, said: “It
really is that easy to prevent many incidents of car crime… just
by reducing the thieves opportunies.
“As car security systems get more sophisticated and much harder
to get around, we’re seeing a marked increase in thefts of car
keys from houses as a principal means of stealing vehicles.
“Car thieves and burglars specifically go looking for keys and
keyrings in homes, often placed handily in an open basket close to an
unlocked front or back door. They might as well have a ‘take me
I’m yours’ label on them!”
Thieves are most often looking to steal high-value/high performance
cars, and leaving your keys lying around is the fastest way to lose
them.
Many of Britain’s towns and cities are plagued by these types
of bold burglaries and thefts - especially during the winter months
- which leads police forces nationwide warning householders to hide
their car keys at night.
Other key action points to help beat car crime might include:
At home
- Locking
your garden gates
- Fitting
key operated window locks
In the car
- Installing and using a good car alarm and/or immobiliser
- Etching
windows with your car registration number
- Parking
as close to your house as possible and in a well lit area
- Keeping
doors locked when driving and sitting in traffic
- Removing
your car stereo/CD player if possible
- Don’t
leave valuables or bags on view
- And
use locking wheel nuts on vehicles with alloy wheels
