Motorists urged to “mind the gap” for vulnerable cyclists

UK motorists are being urged to "mind the gap", be more vigilant and keep an eye out for bikers and cyclists.

Motorcyclists especially are 30 times more likely to die in a road accident than motorists - mainly because, says car breakdown service Autonational Rescue, they're vastly more vulnerable than car drivers.

Autonational’s marketing manager Ronan Hart said: “Most accidents between bikes and cars can be avoided if more care is taken by both types of road users - especially at junctions.

“In particular, we are simply asking motorists to make more room for all the cyclists on our roads.”

They don’t actually contribute to traffic jams, so it is no problem to simply let them pass.

In busy towns and cities, cyclists can legitimately use the gaps between stationary car queues, so motorists should not straddle lanes or turn without signalling well in advance and checking first in their side mirrors.

Added Autonational: “Give cyclists plenty of space when overtaking, and leave room on the nearside for them to pass you at junctions or when traffic becomes jammed.”

On average, around 3,500 people are killed on British roads every year, and nearly 18% are bikers.
