A winter breakdown is snow fun

so the best way to avoid one is to plan for it, says Autonational Rescue

Britain’s best drivers need nerves of steel to cope with the most severe and demanding winter driving conditions.

But whether we’re in the grip of ice and snow or battling against wet and wild conditions… there’s always the chance your car will "give up the ghost" at the precise second that causes you maximum inconvenience.

The fact is, you can easily take action yourself which will help ensure that you are at least ready and able to handle almost any unwelcome emergency.

Breakdown service Autonational Rescue has issued key advice to help motorists be prepared for the worst as the weather turns cold and nasty:

Think about carrying the top ten most useful items in your car this winter. Namely:

Scraper
De-icer
Working torch
Folding shovel
Suitable gloves
A bag of sand or grip mat
Warning triangle
Map (or sat nav!)
Tow and battery-jumping cables and
First aid kit

Also, says Autonational Rescue’s marketing manager Ronan Hart: “Don’t forget your mobile phone if you have one, possibly the most useful anti breakdown accessory a motorists can have, and an emergency HELP sign that you can place in the back window if you get really stuck!“

A blanket is also a good idea, just in case. And if you have any warm winter clothes you don't wear regularly, especially an old pair of sturdy shoes, throw them in your boot as well.

”And to help avoid a winter breakdown in the first place:

- Look after your car’s battery and it will look after your car!

- Don’t run out of fuel, one of the most avoidable but also the most common causes of breakdown. Check your fuel gauge at the start of each winter journey, just in case you get stuck in traffic and need longer to get home than normal.

- Check your car’s radiator for any visible signs of damage or leaks, which can and does lead to overheating and breakdown.

- And look out for other mechanical or electrical faults, such as damaged exhausts, loose or corroded wires.

Added Ronan Hart: "Many of these types of breakdowns, in particular running out of fuel and battery problems, are easily avoidable with a little thought and care beforehand”
