Press releasesMost car buyers rely on blind trustDrivers in Yorkshire are no puddings when it comes to buying a used car. They don’t go by just looks alone, but want checks on the vehicle’s history, whether it’s been clocked, stolen, written off or has any outstanding finance against it... So says a new survey by breakdown service Autonational Rescue. Half of potential car buyers in Yorkshire admit to wanting these key car history facts before parting with their cash. But, surprisingly, Scots aren’t quite so canny with their money with only a quarter asking the same really pertinent car history questions. Countrywide an average of nearly 50% of potential buyers just don’t bother to check on past history, but are happy to base their choice largely on the make or model. Autonational’s marketing manager Ronan Hart said: “Sadly only 18% cared about ‘green’ credentials linked to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. “While 16% were concerned about whether it was manual or automatic, and just 5% bothered about the colour.” Even less - only 1% - based their car purchase on the vehicle’s ‘extra accessories’ such as the latest high-tech car craze satellite navigation. Added Ronan Hart: “With the publicity given to the pitfalls of buying a used car, it’s surprising that there still seems to be a blind trust by many when paying over money for a second hand vehicle without making relatively simple checks on its history.” The independent survey was carried out across the UK for breakdown service Autonational Rescue by RSGB Omnibus, based on a representative sample of around 1,000 adults at 65 sampling points.
