Press releasesTearaway teenagers are the ‘worst drivers’...say teenagers!Even teenage drivers themselves admit they’re among the worst in Britain. In a new nationwide survey asking a cross-section of drivers who they consider to be the very worst behind the wheel, one third of all road users point the finger at the under twenties. And that’s not just the view of experienced drivers interviewed. Even those surveyed in the 16-24 age bracket admit to having a lot to learn in a car. Tearaway teenagers top the worst driver poll on 32% well ahead of drivers at the other end of the age scale – the over 70s – (at 23%) and then the much-maligned white van man (19%). School run mums and 4x4 fanatics were considered by 13% to being a real worry on the roads, while motorcyclists and HGV drivers are thought to be among the best, both polling only single figures. Autonational’s marketing manager Ronan Hart said: “Our findings coincide with other worrying statistics on teenage drivers which highlight the number of teenage motorists dying in road crashes rising from 113 in 2000 to 151 in 2004, despite the number holding licences falling markedly.” This has led to calls for new training methods or restricted licences and discussions on a possible ban on night driving and a limit on the number of passengers carried. Added Ronan: “Until there are moves in that direction, I suspect teenagers will continue to be viewed as the worst behind the wheel.” The independent survey was carried out across the UK for breakdown service Autonational Rescue by RSGB Omnibus, based on a representative sample of around 1,000 adults at 65 sampling points..
