Seat belts should be child's play

IT SHOULD be child’s play for motorists to comply with a change in new seat belt laws, according to one of the country’s leading car breakdown services Autonational Rescue.

But there has been some opposition from parents to more new child car restraint laws which come into effect on September 18 which will mean that parents will have to make sure that children under 4 ft 5 inches in height use an appropriate child car seat, booster seat or booster cushion in cars and vans.

“It’s all about saving lives,” says Autonational’s marketing manager Ronan Hart, “and the fact that there are 2,000 child deaths or injuries a year in vehicle accidents should override any opposition by parents about the difficulties in finding or buying the appropriate safeguards for their children.”

He said that there are major retailers, such as Mothercare, Toys R Us and Halfords, who stock a selection of the appropriate restraints and even offer free fitting checks in certain areas of the country.

He added: “It is vitally important to use the right type of restraint and not to use an adult belt before the child is big enough.”

The main points of the new law are that:

All children under three years old must use an approved baby seat;
Children between three years and 12 must use the correct child seat, booster seat or booster cushion until they reach a height of 4 ft 5 inches;
Taller children and all those over 12 and over need to use adult seat belts, and
Rear-facing baby seats must not be used in seats with an active frontal air-bag.

His warning is: “The penalties for not using a seat belt or child restraint remain at a £30 fixed penalty but up to £500 if the case goes to court. As a driver, if you are convicted of failing to ensure that a child passenger is using an appropriate child restraint, or wearing a seat belt, you could also face a fine of up to £500.”
