Press releases

PAY AS YOU GO DRIVE PLAN IS JUST ANOTHER TAX!

A proposed nationwide ‘pay-as-you-drive’ charge for motorists has got short change from a vehicle breakdown service Autonational Rescue.

A report commissioned by the Government, which recommends motorists should be asked to pay to drive on Britain’s road network, has been dismissed as “yet another financial burden on car owners”.

The report suggests that with revenue raised from road charging, which could yield as much as £16 billion a year, the government would be able to at least ‘investigate’ replacing fuel duty and road tax.

But Autonational’s marketing manager Ronan Hart believes said: “We see it as just another means of extracting money from motorists.

“They already pay heavily for the tax disc and hefty fuel taxes, and that money isn’t channelled into road building or transport infrastructure, but into other areas.

“It is money the Government can’t do without and any additional road toll revenue will simply be used as extra income used to help balance their books.”

The report advocates drivers paying to use roads when they are busy or congested with speculation that the charge could be as much as £1.30 per mile to use the most congested routes.

The government has already indicated its approval to trial road pricing schemes in England and has given councils more freedom to introduce such schemes in busy areas.

Added Autonational’s marketing manager: “What is desperately needed to reduce growing congestion is progress on the vital integrated transport system with some serious investment in roads and public transport.

“Why doesn’t the government take an integrated transport system seriously instead of taxing the motorists all the time.”

“It’s the only genuine answer to today’s congestion.”
