Press releasesAN ANSWER TO LITTERBUG BRITAINFrom fish and chip papers to fag ends, sweet wrappers to plastic bags, Britain’s motorists have the answer to litterbug Britain! UK drivers are calling for heavier fines and penalties for everyone who drops litter, according to a brand new survey by car breakdown service Autonational Rescue. More than a third of all motorists in the survey – 34% - called for higher fines and penalties for all litterbugs. What’s more, 27% of all drivers - and 35% of women – agree that shops and companies should be discouraged from producing goods for sale in plastic bags and other non organic packaging. Fly tippers also come in for a pounding with 21% of adults questioned in the survey wanting to see them actively pursued, caught and prosecuted by local authorities. Said Autonational’s marketing manager Ronan Hart: “Motorists themselves are often viewed as being among the worst offenders when it comes to emptying ash trays at traffic lights or dumping their rubbish out of their car windows. “So it is interesting to see that many motorists want to see higher fines and penalties for people who drop litter.” The survey also showed support for higher litterbug fines and penalties was higher in some regions of the UK than in others, with 53% in support of higher fines in the Scottish Borders and 47% in the North West of England, compared with just 20% in Yorkshire and 23% in the South and South East of England. And in the East of England, 14% of adults wanted to see road verges cut at least twice a year by local councils and litter collected more often. While 18% of adults in the North East wanted to see Civic Amenity Centres (or council dumps in other words) made more user friendly than they currently are. Added Ronan Hart: “Litter can have a huge and extremely negative effect on a neighbourhood - both in terms of very real damage to the environment and hurting or even killing wildlife and domestic pets.” Then there are the clean-up costs to consider. Clearing litter – such as half eaten fast food and takeaways - from our streets alone costs an estimated £332 million a year, which increases everyone’s tax burden.
