Driving in Rain and Fog: Stay Safe and Seen
When rain pours or fog rolls in, even experienced drivers can find it tricky to stay confident on the road. Beyond the usual advice about slowing down and using lights correctly, here are a few lesser-known tips that could make a real difference.
1. Keep your air con on to clear foggy windows faster
It might sound strange, but turning on the air conditioning — even with the heater — helps remove moisture from the air inside your car. It clears misted windows much faster than heat alone.
2. Adjust your wing mirrors slightly downwards in heavy rain
A small tilt helps you see the white lines and kerbs more clearly when the road is shiny or reflecting lights. It’s a simple trick that can stop glare from hiding what’s around you.
3. Use your fog lights sparingly but your dipped beams always
Many drivers switch on full beams in fog, but that only reflects light back and makes it harder to see. Dipped beams cut through fog more effectively, while fog lights should only be used when visibility is seriously reduced.
4. Follow the tail lights — but not too closely
If visibility is poor, keeping the glow of the car ahead in sight can help you stay on the right path. Just remember to leave plenty of room so you have time to react if they slow suddenly.
5. Keep a small towel in the car
Wiping the inside of your windscreen with a clean, dry towel before you set off reduces the build-up of condensation. It’s a small habit that makes a big difference on damp mornings.
6. Park facing east when frost is forecast
If you park outdoors overnight, facing east means your windscreen will catch the morning sun — which helps melt frost and saves time scraping before work.
Even with all the right tricks, bad weather can catch anyone out. That’s why it’s reassuring to know Autonational is only ever a call away, ready to get you back on the road whatever the weather brings.
