As the days grow shorter, now’s a good time to make sure your vehicle’s ready for darker evenings and early nightfall. It’s not just about switching your lights on – night driving calls for a few extra checks to keep things safe and stress-free.
- Clean Your Headlights – Inside and Out
It’s easy to overlook the inside of your headlights. Over time, condensation or a film of dust can reduce brightness. If your lights look hazy even after a wipe down, consider having the units cleaned or restored – it can significantly improve visibility without replacing the bulbs. - Check Dashboard Dimmer Settings
Some drivers accidentally turn the dashboard lights down and don’t notice it until they’re struggling to read their speed at night. Before the darker evenings arrive, adjust your instrument panel brightness so you’re not squinting on the move. - Update Your Sat Nav or Map App
Getting lost in the dark is no one’s idea of a good evening. Make sure your sat nav or phone app is up to date – and if you rely on your phone, check that your car charger works and your holder keeps the screen clearly visible. - Reposition Items That Could Reflect Light
Anything shiny on your dashboard – a parking permit in a wallet, sunglasses, or even phone mounts – can reflect streetlights or passing headlights onto the windscreen. A quick tidy-up can help reduce glare and distractions. - Give the Inside of the Windscreen a Proper Clean
At night, dirt and film buildup on the inside of your windscreen causes extra glare. A microfibre cloth and a proper glass cleaner will make a huge difference to how clearly you see the road ahead. - Check Your Glasses (If You Wear Them)
If you wear glasses, make sure they’re anti-reflective and clean – small smudges can catch oncoming headlights and distort your vision in the dark. If you don’t usually wear them but feel strain at night, it might be time for a quick eye check. - Watch Out for Wildlife and Pedestrians
In rural or poorly lit areas, animals and pedestrians can be harder to spot. Scan the edges of the road and slow down when visibility is limited – especially in areas with no pavements.
